Although salt-production areas originally were located in individual structures in the vicinity of the spring, they were eventually combined into large factories. Two of these factories, numbers 1 and 3, are still extant at Ningchang Township. In the preserved areas of these factories, we observed the set of facilities used in the purification and boiling of the brine. In this shallow vat, soy milk was added, and impurities were removed and placed in a sludge basket. After processing the brine in this area, the salt maker transferred it to the deeper boiling pan using a hose employed as a simple hand pump. In the deeper container, greater heat boiled the solution and induced evaporation. As salt came out of solution, the worker shoveled it into a makeshift basket. The basket consisted of a shallow basketry tray used as a base and a mat. The basketry bases remained permanently in place on top of the heated platform, but mats were rolled into cylinders and placed on the bottoms to produce temporary walls for the baskets.
