Legs, neck, and the dagger-like bill are all very long. In flight, the Great Blue Heron folds its neck back on its shoulders and trails its feet horizontally behind its body. Upon takeoff, this heron flaps its wings heavily, but as it picks up speed, the wing beats become slow and deep. Herons are generally quiet unless disturbed or startled, then they utter deep, harsh croaks sounding like grak or kraak. They may also resonate in a deep, raucous frahnk, frahnk, frahnk. They breed in colonies, but are usually solitary the rest of the year.
